Adjusting Your Decor for Children
When you are decorating with children in mind, you have to take into consideration their safety. You might dream of a living room full of antique furniture and fine ceramic vases on columns but in reality it isn't practical and children have a way of running and bumping into something valuable during play.
Instead, make the rooms your children will be in the most, kid friendly. That doesn't mean you can't have nice furnishing or antiques; it just means keep in mind, even the best behaved children run and jump indoors on occasion-even when they are not supposed to.
Go for pieces such as cabinets, floors and counter tops that are easy to clean without a lot of ornate scrollwork. Kids don't mean to be messy but especially with small children, messes happen. Don't expect to have a room that looks like it came out of a museum if you have small children, expect to have a warm family room filled with the laughter of happy kids and design around that.
An
armoire is a great way to put up a television, DVD player and or stereo so they can be used in the room but not susceptible to damage from accidents that can happen during play. A bench with storage is a great way to put up board games and other items the kids might use infrequently in the room. A small table and chairs built to children's sizes is ideal for doing art, crafts or having an imaginary tea party.
Decorating when you have small children is easy and fun. Just keep it safe and easy to clean and then unleash your creativity!
