From Baby to Toddler - A New Bed
If your baby has learned the fine art of climbing out of his
crib when he's awake for the day or if he has awakened from a nap and no longer waits for you to come get him - it's time to get him a safer place to sleep.
No matter how safe the
crib you purchased for your baby is, once he learns to climb or otherwise get out of his
crib it is dangerous. He could get a foot or hand caught in the
crib rail and injure his ankle or wrist with a nasty sprain or worse-a break. Children also injure themselves falling over the top rails of their cribs and incurring head injuries - you can avoid this by simply giving your child a
toddler bed.
Toddler beds are the same size as a crib usually and they also normally use a
crib mattress. However they only have rails around the top of the
bed where your child's head and shoulders would be. This is normally all most children need to not fall out of
bed during the night or nap time.
Make it special when you decide to change out your child's
bed. Let him pick out his new
bedding. Even children who don't usually adjust well to change of any kind will usually warm up quickly to a new
bed if they had a hand in the decision making process for setting it up. Let him pick out the comforter and also let him choose a new pillow; you'll find he'll be looking forward to bedtime!
