Interior Design Software to Get the Look You Want

One way to see your design job before you decorate is to use an interior designer software program.

These plans can save you a lot of headache by showing you that your choice of a red sofa and greed draperies might not create the contrast you thought it would in your finished room. You can add and delete items as you see fit and rearrange furnishing to get the most out of your space.

You can create and change floor coverings, wall colors and see what will really make your room have its own signature look. There are even software programs that will allow for exact measurements of your furniture so you can accurately place your furnishings around your room in a realistic manner. Many of them will allow you to recover your furniture using preloaded fabric options - you might even find yourself looking at fabric options you never even considered before.

Software programs are fantastic for getting ideas for your interior. A few higher end programs will allow you to load pictures of your art, rugs and more so you can truly work with your own items. Add that accent table or French wall clock and see if either one will really fit in your new decor.

In most of them you will find thousands of options for colors and patterns as well as suggestions of what tones and colors blend well together and how to add contrasts around your room.

Getting the Look Just Right in a Small Space

Sometimes, when you're faced with decorating a small space, the task can seem as daunting as decorating the Taj Mahal.

The secret to small spaces is that you literally have to make every single inch count. It doesn't matter whether the entire place is a small apartment or a little bungalow house, you will need to apply the same mindset and tricks to make your small space work.

Make the most of your space by utilizing functional decor pieces. An armoire can make a grand cabinet in a bedroom that can hold your television, and drawers for a ton of small items that you'll need now and then but will want to keep put up otherwise to avoid the look of clutter.

Small spaces have a lot of pluses. They cost less overall and they are easy to heat and cool. Additionally, unlike a larger place - you won't spend an enormous amount of time dusting and cleaning as it will take far less time.

If your room has some built-ins such as fireplaces, bookshelves or a bar, you have a jumping off point to begin designing your room. Otherwise pick an item or corner and work outwards from there. That way you can pick up elements and colors as you go through the room and eliminate anything that just won't work and stay in the flow of the feel and colors for the room.

Keep your colors light and your furniture items small and functional and you can wind up with a very cozy decor in your small space!

Great Decor Looks on a Budget

If you have put off decorating your room because you think you don't have the money - think again. It's easy to do a whole room on a budget and in fact certain television shows have made the entire idea into shows that let designers remake rooms while staying under budget. If you think you can't do it because you're not a designer, give yourself a chance- decorating a room isn't as hard as you think.

If you've never decorated an entire room on your own before, start small to avoid getting frustrated or flustered with what to do. First all choose a room. Since most people spend that majority of their time in their living room it is a good place to start. Consider the feeling you want in the room, most people want comfort, relaxation and warmth conveyed in their living rooms.

Consider warm colors for your walls and also take the size of the room into consideration. If it's a large room you can go a little darker in your paint colors and make the room seem a little more cozy, if you've got a smaller room - go for the lighter paint colors as they will allow your room to expand in the mind's eye and a larger room will be perceived.

Other elements you can add that will be budget friendly are plants, pillows, and splurge for an area rug that will go a long way into tying your decor together. Mirrors are great for adding the illusion of more space in a room and if you have some photos you love of your family and friends; get some plain black frames and make an artful grouping on your walls.

If you have some furniture items in your garage or basement that have been spirited away because they need painting or are broken, fix them or paint them and you'll give that piece a whole new life not to mention save yourself a lot of money.

With a few changes and attention to colors used in a room, you can completely change the feeling in a room from a jumbled mess to a well put together decor that will make your guests feel very welcome!

Adjusting Your Decor for Children

When you are decorating with children in mind, you have to take into consideration their safety. You might dream of a living room full of antique furniture and fine ceramic vases on columns but in reality it isn't practical and children have a way of running and bumping into something valuable during play.

Instead, make the rooms your children will be in the most, kid friendly. That doesn't mean you can't have nice furnishing or antiques; it just means keep in mind, even the best behaved children run and jump indoors on occasion-even when they are not supposed to.

Go for pieces such as cabinets, floors and counter tops that are easy to clean without a lot of ornate scrollwork. Kids don't mean to be messy but especially with small children, messes happen. Don't expect to have a room that looks like it came out of a museum if you have small children, expect to have a warm family room filled with the laughter of happy kids and design around that.

An armoire is a great way to put up a television, DVD player and or stereo so they can be used in the room but not susceptible to damage from accidents that can happen during play. A bench with storage is a great way to put up board games and other items the kids might use infrequently in the room. A small table and chairs built to children's sizes is ideal for doing art, crafts or having an imaginary tea party.

Decorating when you have small children is easy and fun. Just keep it safe and easy to clean and then unleash your creativity!

Making Your Apartment Pop!

You're a little limited both space wise and landlord wise when you rent an apartment as far as decorating options go. But you can turn those boring old beige carpets, white walls, and eggshell ceilings into something uniquely you.

Cleverly done, you can add a good number of additions to your apartment without forfeiting your deposit on your living space. First of all, read your lease and find out what you can add to apartment and stay within the contract.

If you really can't stand the boring walls, talk to your landlord; many times they will let you paint the walls in a light yet easy to cover color. You'll have more luck if you're renting from a private individual than if you were renting from an apartment complex. Some private landlords will even give you a discounted rental rate on the month you paint the property you're renting. Don't be afraid to negotiate.

A large area rug can completely change the mood of a room. Add pillows to your couches and chairs that match the rug to tie in your color scheme. Go all out on your window treatments. Use a decorative rod as well as flowing fabrics and it will hide the fact you have boring old apartment windows.

Other accessories you can add include plants all around - either silk or real depending on the greenness of your thumb. Also put up your art and photos. To avoid having to fill nail holes in the walls when you move out, adhesive putty works fabulous for most light to medium weight framed items.

You can have an apartment that looks fabulous while having your own personal decorating stamp. Now that you know the basics, add some pop to your apartment!
